Language Out Loud (LOL) by THiNKSeries, in partnership with the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR), has completed successfully. The competition targets pupils at the age of 6 to 12 and is open to school nomination and individual participation. This year, over 40 schools registered to participate in the competition. Through LOL, pupils can explore and present their own interpretations of selected classic stories; they can unleash their potential by reading, thinking and writing, and putting their good work on public display through Zoom.
LOL is a campaign and competition that celebrates and promotes the use of language arts among primary students in Hong Kong, and to boost their confidence in their ability to read and interpret English. Apart from the sponsor, SCOLAR, that provides valuable resources in the competition, LOL is also proudly supported by Cultural Agents at Harvard University, Wiseman Education and Fun and Friends; this allows for the enrichment of this collaborative learning experience by incorporating a global perspective.
LOL’s objective is to create a pleasurable language learning environment, providing opportunities for primary students to unleash their curiosity in the world of a classic novel. It aims to not only be a competition, but a cultural celebration, and hopes to inspire student growth and enjoyment outside of school settings.
Through this campaign, THiNKSeries aims to “connect, extend and challenge the perspectives of our next generation to become global citizens”.
The LOL Awards Ceremony was held on 17th July 2021 at SummerFest Central Harbour to celebrate the efforts and wonderful works of participants. Over 20 schools, 60 students and 120 parents attended the ceremony to share the joy and glory of participants and winners. The ceremony includes prize presentation, guest sharing, performances from winners, and display of winners’ work in different forms.
The competition was divided into four categories, from Primary One to Primary Six students, plus an open category. Various prizes were presented to acknowledge students’ creativity, scene interpretation, outstanding performance and eloquence:
“We were very glad to see the active participation of students joining the event, as well as the high number of views and votes,” said Sandra Lam, LOL 2021 Coordinator. A total of 1,120 entries were received, and these videos were viewed 140,885 times. The total number of public votes reached 34,347. “Winners of the People’s Choice Awards should be very proud of themselves.”
The highlight of the ceremony was sharing and demonstration from winners, which was met with continuous applause and praise from the audience. “All participating teachers, students and parents enjoyed the exemplary performances and shared the fruits of triumph,” said Regina Heung, LOL 2021 Student Workshop Trainer.
We feel very proud of students’ active participation and high quality work. Congratulations to all winners!
